The breast shapes come in different sizes, shapes and colours. Most women should be able to find something they are happy with on the NHS. But if not, there is more choice available if you buy your own from a manufacturer. Foam prostheses are also available. A foam prosthesis is lighter and cooler. It may be more suitable if you’re particularly active or you may find this style more comfortable in warmer weather.
Prostheses come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and skin tones. Most are made from materials that are designed to move, feel and weigh as similar to a natural breast as possible. I was at an annual industry ball my then-magazine was hosting (as a clipboard warrior, not a guest, sadly) and the CEO of the world’s biggest online fashion retailer arrived. These prostheses are available if you have part of your breast removed. You wear it inside your bra and it is shaped to fill out the breast outline. After breast surgery, your breast care nurse or one of the ward nurses will usually give you a fabric-covered temporary prosthesis, often called a ‘softie’ or ‘cumfie/comfie’, to wear during this time. A symmetrical form is usually an oval or triangular shape that can be worn on either the left or right side.
