About this deal

There were real problems with posterization; color gradients separated into distinct blobs of color on-screen. Downsides include its low contrast and colour gamut, and hard-to-reach settings – but for that price, you can’t expect miracles. Matthew S. Most display monitors will have multiple input options, including the DVI input, HDMI cord, and the VGA. This allows you to filter images from multiple devices to one display. For example, you may feed the monitor using a gaming console and a PC tower. If this is the case, you need to ensure that you have the settings correct for your monitor. Switch to the correct source.

For these reasons, you won’t want to use the I1601FWUX for any heavy photo or video editing. But, assuming you’re working with a laptop that’s powerful enough to competently handle something like Adobe Premiere Pro anyway, your device will (hopefully) come with a decent screen. The quality of the folding stand is more than a little frustrating, especially when there are so many better examples on the market as covers for iPads and other tablets. It's hard to overlook the poor execution of such a vital element of the product. Contrast ratio is 565:1, which isn’t ideal. Generally, a decent level of contrast for an IPS monitor is anything close to 1000:1 or higher, so this is way off the mark. This is particularly noticeable when watching videos where there’s plenty of dark areas or high levels of contrast – live music videos being a good example. As we said above, you can get around this somewhat by upping contrast and overdrive, but it still isn’t perfect.Using our colorimeter, we tested the I1601FWUX at its default brightness level of 70/100. Colour temperature was around 6931K, so a little over the 6500K ideal. At no point did the I1601FWUX look particularly cool, though. It’s also easy to shift around on your desk – if you need to feng shui things to make way for a steaming mug of coffee, or to make room for your cat that just leapt up to try to ‘help’ with your review. The monitor reached a maximum brightness of 228 nits, which is a hair above the promised peak brightness of 220 nits. That’s a modest level of brightness for a modern monitor, though typical at this price point. For a better option, consider the Asus ZenScreen MB16AC, which is also a bit dim but offers better image quality overall, decent stand options and superior controls. The monitor also has what AOC calls LowBlue Mode, which adjusts color temperatures on the display to reduce blue light. Certain wavelengths of blue light that are commonly produced by monitors and other glowing displays have been linked to eyestrain, insomnia and even age-related macular degeneration. Automatic color tweaks seem like a simple way to avoid some of this potential damage.

If you have worked through the other fixes and you are still getting a no signal message, then you need to try something a little more on the hardware side of things. You may need to try to connect your PC to a different monitor or your monitor to a different PC to see if the issues continue or if it is the combination of the two.The illumination looks even and when a 256 shade gradient was applied for testing, the display looked relatively even with only a few areas that you could tell there was a transition. As far as viewing angles, the picture can get a little dim when not viewed straight on, but you can still get a good idea of what you are looking at on the screen, regardless of which angle you might be viewing it from. Some might have problems with a screen that has a response time of 5ms, but in my daily use which included writing, YouTube, and some light movie watching through Netflix, this wasn't an issue. AOC’s I1601FWUX is very much a plug and play device. It’s light, weighing just 0.82kg, and measures 235.2 x 376.1 x 8.3mm, so you can sling it in your laptop bag without it taking up too much room or adding much weight. If there is a solid complaint, it would be the "case" that comes with the device. This is essentially a cover that protects the front of the display when you are carrying it around but also doubles as a stand. It folds and has magnetic sections that latch on to the screen. Now, your ability to use the monitor relies on the quality of this stand and sadly it just isn't all that good.
