Don't get me wrong, I think she is a natural, gifted writer who has had no professional training or guidance. She is attempting to educate herself in matters of technique and form although this is a low priority for her compared to her need to conjure unconscious intuitions into material reality - WORDS. She is making great leaps forward. "Grey," is so much better technically than the trilogy. She is learning step by agonizing step. And I admire her so much for this. She dares to do it in a very public way leaving herself open to all the vicious criticism bound to come her way. She was a producer on each of the three Fifty Shades movies, which made more than a billion dollars at the box office. The third installment, Fifty Shades Freed, won the People’s Choice Award for Drama in 2018. A film adaptation of the book was produced by Focus Features, [60] Michael De Luca Productions, and Trigger Street Productions, [61] with Universal Pictures and Focus Features securing the rights to the trilogy in March 2012. [62] Universal is also the film's distributor. Charlie Hunnam was originally cast in the role of Christian Grey alongside Dakota Johnson in the role of Anastasia Steele, [63] [64] but Hunnam gave up the part in October 2013, [65] with Jamie Dornan announced for the role on 23 October. [66] Schaub, Michael (10 October 2017). "E.L. James has a new 'Fifty Shades': 'Darker' from Christian's point of view". Los Angeles Times. Archived from the original on 25 January 2021 . Retrieved 23 April 2021. Here are some actual examples and how it seems -- to me -- that the bite was removed from the character. The letter *O* means the original story versus *C* for this story.

Alex Stedman (10 June 2015). " 'Fifty Shades' Spinoff 'Grey' Stolen From Publisher (Report)". Variety . Retrieved 9 September 2015. O: She has a small, sweet face that is blushing now, an innocent pale rose. I wonder briefly if all her skin is like that -- flawless -- and what it would look like pink and warmed from the bite of a cane. F---. (italics) I stop my wayward thoughts, alarmed at their direction. What the f --- are you thinking, Grey? (italics) This girl is much too young. (italics) She gapes at me, and I almost roll my eyes again. Yeah, yeah, baby, it's just a face, and the beauty is only skin deep. (italics) I want to dispel that unguarded, admiring look from those big blue eyes. Naturally when women are attracted to this man they want to know every little detail of his world, his EVERY thought and emotion, his actions and feelings in every relationship he has, his likes and dislikes on every topic under the sun. THANK YOU Erika, you’ve made me a very very happy woman. Now please get writing Darker and Freed, because you’ve just refueled my addiction for all things 50 Shades of Grey. Fifty Shades of Grey has often been challenged, banned, and removed in the United States. The book landed on the American Library Association's Top 10 List of Banned and Challenged Books in 2012 (4), 2013 (4), and 2015 (2) because it is sexually explicit and unsuited for the age group; has nudity and offensive language; and for religious viewpoints. [52] Challengers also stated the book was "poorly written," and they were concerned "a group of teenagers will want to try [BDSM]." [52] Ultimately, the book became the eighth-most banned book between 2010 and 2019. [53]

Fifty Shades of Grey has attracted criticism due to its depictions of BDSM, with some BDSM participants stating that the book confuses the practice with abuse, and presents it as a pathology to be overcome, as well as showing incorrect and possibly dangerous BDSM techniques. [39] [40] Bonomi, Amy E.; Altenburger, Lauren E.; Walton, Nicole L. (September 2013). " "Double crap!" Abuse and harmed identity in Fifty Shades of Grey". Journal of Women's Health. Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. 22 (9): 733–744. doi: 10.1089/jwh.2013.4344. PMID 23931257. Christian Grey exercises control in all things; his world is neat, disciplined, and utterly empty—until the day that Anastasia Steele falls into his office, in a tangle of shapely limbs and tumbling brown hair.He tries to forget her, but instead is swept up in a storm of emotion he cannot comprehend and cannot resist.Unlike any woman he has known before, shy, unworldly Ana seems to see right through him—past the business prodigy and the penthouse lifestyle to Christian’s cold, wounded heart. Christian may be out of his comfort zone, but his money and power buy him powerful resources in the pursuit of Miss Steele, making him a little prone to stalker-like activity. The man is on a mission to win her over, and he soon finds out that she is more than he bargained for. He regrets having exposed someone so innocent to his lifestyle, but by then it is really too late. Anastasia seems to want him, too. As the couple tentatively moves forward, Christian hopes to establish boundaries and rules, bringing Anastasia into his world. She is open to trying new things but doesn’t hide the fact that she wants more. She wants a relationship.

What makes this character, Christian Grey, so compelling to women? James touches on the male archetype buried in our psyches. Jung would call him an "animus" figure. For instance, people being angry, and castigating Christian for wanting to use "Anastasia" instead of using "Ana". Yet now we know that the sound of Ana was too close to Ella, his mother. And that brought too many ugly memories to the surface. We would have never known or understood that before. People just thought that he was a mean, control freak, uncaring person.I was aware that this was going to be the first book retold by Christian's viewpoint. I expected the same story, but from his thoughts and feelings. WOMEN ENVY THE WOMAN WHO POSSESSES HIM. He is so beautiful and rich that other women desire him. James exploits this fact to the fullest. Women want to possess something that makes other women envious. Women want to be desired by a man that is desired by other women. We can be very very shallow creatures. C: And the elevator doors close, leaving my name hanging in the air between us, sounding odd and unfamiliar, but sexy as hell. For the naysayers, just keep in mind while reading that this is a fantasy. There are certainly many happily married real-life couples that meet and marry in record-breaking time, and there are likewise real-life billionaires who are entitled to their own happy stories. There are also people that are healed by the love of someone special in their life. But this doesn’t pretend to be more than a fantasy – a love story.

He is SEXUALLY WISE and experienced. He knows a woman's body intimately. He can manipulate it at will and bring her to the heights of sexual ecstasy. I don't know how much this connects to the archetype but it sure as hell is something women crave. It's NOT the foreplay and not the spending of time romancing and bumbling around. It's knowing how to take control so sex is not the servicing of needs for one person, but a union of two where both can lose themselves transcending the physical. And in the scheme of things, it is the man who holds the key for this experience to happen. Not that James always succeeds in conveying this, but she knows what she is trying to portray. She knows she needs to write of sex intimately, but how? This has been a problem for writers since man made his first mark on paper. She achieved the intimacy needed for me much of the time without turning the scenes into pornography, but everybody has their own opinions on this. I think her need to portray rough sex might have had an influence on her deciding to bring the world of BDSM into the novel. It provides a built-in platform for conveying danger and for exposing less than acceptable behaviors that surface in sexual relationships such as desiring to spank or be spanked, or desiring to be tied up, at the mercy of an aggressive man. Will being with Ana dispel the horrors of his childhood that haunt Christian every night? Or will his dark sexual desires, his compulsion to control, and the self-loathing that fills his soul drive this girl away and destroy the fragile hope she offers him? Could she be willing to attempt a D/s relationship with him? Will she run screaming for the hills when he confesses his intentions? Can she handle the truth when he reveals his darkest desires and needs? Will she see him as he sees himself, a monster, incapable of loving and reciprocating love?
