The novel was loosely adapted into the film The Mating Game in 1959. ITV produced a television series of the novel, and its sequels plus additional original storylines, The Darling Buds of May, which ran from 1991 to 1993. A further adaptation of the novel, The Larkins, was made by ITV and broadcast in October 2021.
It is not then, as my imperfect impressions and memories may have led me to believe, a poor-man's Cold Comfort Farm. In the hands of a satirist the Larkins would have been deliciously lampooned - as uncouth, vulgar new-money they're an easy target. They are instead though seen to be overwhelmingly happy with their life and we can't help but like and admire them - it's this that creates the false nostalgia impression. Instead, it's those people who are concerned with appearances and respectability who are the objects of fun, from the tweed-clad spinster, to the local squire concerned with keeping his tumbling pile to the white-collar office clerk. Herbert Ernest Bates, CBE is widely recognised as one of the finest short story writers of his generation, with more than 20 story collections published in his lifetime. It should not be overlooked, however, that he also wrote some outstanding novels, starting with The Two Sisters through to A Moment in Time, with such works as Love For Lydia, Fair Stood the Wind for France and The Scarlet Sword earning high praise from the critics. His study of the Modern Short Story is considered one of the best ever written on the subject. In 1931, he married Madge Cox, who lived two streets away from him in his native Rushden. They relocated to the village of Little Chart in Kent and bought an old granary and this together with an acre of garden they converted into a home. Bates was a keen and knowledgeable gardener who wrote many books on flowers. The Granary remained their home for the whole of their married life. Ma and Pop Larkin and their five children – Mariette, Montgomery, Zinnia, Petunia and Primrose are returning home from a lovely outing to get fish and chips and some ice cream. When they arrive home, eldest Mariette notices a strange man in the yard, looking like he’s been waiting for them.Three hundred girls auditioned for the part of Mariette before Catherine Zeta Jones was found. The series launched Catherine's career, and she is now considered a Hollywood A-lister. Bates was a keen and knowledgeable gardener and wrote numerous books on flowers. The Granary remained their home for the whole of their married life. After the death of H. E Bates, Madge moved to a bungalow, which had originally been a cow byre, next to the Granary. ISBN 0-8057-6844-0 In the Darling Buds of May, Pam took on the role of Florence Daisy "Ma" (Parker) Larkin, the mother of the family. This was one of Pam's first on screen roles, and the one that would see her rise in popularity. Other novels followed after the war; he averaged about one novel and a collection of short stories a year, which was considered very productive at the time. These included The Feast of July and Love for Lydia. His most popular creation was the Larkin family in The Darling Buds of May. Pop Larkin and his family were inspired by a person seen in a local shop in Kent by Bates and his family when on holiday. The man (probably Wiltshire trader William Dell, also on holiday) [7] [8] had a huge wad of rubber-banded bank notes and proceeded to treat his trailer load of children with Easter eggs and ice creams. Other characters were modelled on friends and acquaintances of Bates, such as Iris Snow (a parody of Iris Murdoch) [9] and the Brigadier who was modelled on the father of John Bayley, Murdoch's husband.
