About this deal

I’d lost sight of who I was, and you made me remember. I don’t think I ever said thank you, so I’m saying it now. Thank you. You tread lightly through life, but you leave deep footprints that are hard for other people to fill.” She has a scarred lip, a weak heart and a twisted foot; she has been teased her whole life and her family want to protect her. strangers on different journeys and a glimpse into their lives for one day was what this novel was all about. Caro ,a teacher, had discovered a powerful truth. Cammy was going to propose to a not-so-kind woman Lila. Bernadette was about to leave a boor of a man. One Day in Winter, Another Day in Winter and The Last Day in Winter are all set on the Friday before Christmas one year apart. One Day in Summer follows the year after in early summer. You tread lightly through life, but you leave deep footprints that are hard for other people to fill.

As events unfold across the story, and each character works towards their deserved conclusions, we see deceit, jealousy and attention-seeking, juxtaposed with new hope, genuine love (not necessarily romantic), courage and the power of putting yourself first for once. There is so much to take in across the course of the book, and as usual, Shari makes it impossible for us readers not to spot a little bit of ourselves in at least one character. Is there such a thing as destiny? Is there really one right person for everyone? How can you be happy when someone you truly care about gets what you want, what you think should be "yours"? Can you move on with your life if your heart isn't quite ready to let go?

Need Help?

We stare straight at each other and I can’t look away. I feel my lips move as if I’m going to say something, God knows what, and all of a sudden and out of nowhere I need to get off this bus. I’m gripped by the overwhelming urge to go outside, to get to him. But I don’t.” It talks about love, life and human relationships, and if you ask me, it stands somewhere on the edge between women’s fiction and general fiction.

Thank you to Melanie Price of Aria Fiction, to NetGalley, and Shari Low for providing me an ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review! One of the things that makes this story so great is how it is told over a long period of time. We really get the chance to connect to the characters and see them develop, change, and experience different things. The dynamic between the characters seemed realistic and was heartwarming and truly special.

Meanwhile Bernadette finally finds the courage to leave her loveless and emotionally abusive husband to enjoy the finer things in life she wants to for a change...Throughout the book, Laurie and Sarah share a special sandwich, the Delancey Street Special, which Sarah created in their very first apartment together. It’s a strange combination of ingredients, but it’s the girls’ signature comfort food when they are struggling through something together. We see them mention or partake of the sandwich several times throughout the novel. You tread lightly through life, but you leave deep footprints that are hard for other people to fill.”

I definitely expect this book to become a film sometime in the future. As I read, I was constantly casting the characters with movie stars, which is not my normal modus operandi. If Sam Claflin and Emilia Clark are looking for a screen reunion after Me Before You, this is it. Who did you picture playing the roles? Isla Fisher for Sarah? Okay, I’ll stop. This is one of those books where you have to set aside a bit of relaxation time so you can focus fully on all the characters. All the events take place in a very short space of time, over one day in fact. Seeing a familiar face on one of the random Facebook post, Caro started to think that the father who walked away from them years ago who had a Very Important Job was actually having a Very Important Secret. She decided to ride a train off to Glasgow to see for herself and know the truth. Will Thomasina and Grayson find a way? If you want to know what fate has in store for them then you’ll need to read this beautifully-written novel like One Day in December. This is pitched as a love story, and it is a love story, but it doesn’t talk only about romantic love.

Success!

Ten years go by between these friends, and they experience their share of kindness, heartbreak, disconnects, and could there possibly be second chances?
