About this deal

Truthfully, it’s not really until the end of the comic that the intention of the whole thing becomes clear. I don’t think that Bruce Wayne can be at peace if he is Batman…[There’s] that whole thing of Bruce Wayne using his money, like he could just put all that money into funding Gotham. This is not to say it celebrates how immense sadness can manifest inside its host, just that it’s not afraid to explore both the highs and lows of that cerebral rollercoaster. If I put Two-Face or the Joker or whoever in this book, it’s going to be compared to all those other stories where what I’m really interested in is the psychology of Bruce Wayne…so for me, it just kind of felt like I can earn some street cred here, by not just going to the big star, the big story.

Batman: The Imposter – A Three-Issue Prestige Format Series Offering Up a Unique Vision of Gotham’s Dark Knight! Within this very grounded, realistic Batman story, there are also elements of the wider Batman world and teases of what may be to come in lots of different ways. Just like movie this book also takes things too serious, too realistic, too dark to the point that it no more feels a Batman story. Bruce recounts what happened with Detective Wong to Leslie Thompkins, and realizes that the Batman imposter is targeting criminals. For Tomlin, creating an imposter Caped Crusader was motivated in part by his decision to steer away from direct confrontations with bigger villain names in his comics writing debut, but it was also part of the grounded nature of the story. When director Matt Reeves was first developing his upcoming reboot The Batman, he co-wrote the script with Mattson Tomlin, who is a filmmaker in his own right, having written and directed his debut feature Mother/Android. Jordie Bellaire uses some aptly sick colors but even though I usually like her color chart, it didn’t stick with me this time.

He has distinct style and there were some nice looking pages in this book but after a while, it feels cheap plus lack of colors makes it even more dull. The action is also spectacular as Jordie Bellaire’s colours are used to punctuate the impact of characters getting hurt. Instead of using an ostentatious vehicle like the Batmobile, Batman gets around Gotham inconspicuously using an elaborate network of ziplines and hidden motorcycles. One of the first pages of the book is when Leslie Tompkins is talking about Bruce’s OCD and anxiety and the idea of Batman having the kind of everyday mental illnesses and anxieties that drive him to do the things that he does. Instead, in the spirit of stripping away more allies for Batman to rely on, Tomlin created a new character in Gotham City Detective Blair Wong, a determined investigator who's every bit Bruce Wayne's equal. A big part of it was just making a kind of adversary for him that would create interesting complications for later in the story.

Bruce Wayne’s mission as the Batman has only been under way for a year or so, but he can tell he’s making a difference. Ultimately, it makes for a unique comic that achieves a certain ‘film noir’ aesthetic in both its visuals and its script.Meanwhile, there is a Batman impersonator in Gotham but is taking the extra step in killing his victims. It just creates all of these complications for him that to me really felt like, 'Man, that's going to be tough for Batman to get out of. Perhaps this is why the character and his world have been able to appeal to such a wide variety of audiences during their time in the cultural spotlight.
