About this deal

It’s not a pretty sight, but it is an easy, nontoxic way to eliminate large quantities of adult fungus gnats. There are also many (perhaps 1000's of) species of small fly that occur in Britain most of which are a vital part of natural ecosystems and do not damage garden plants. If you only notice fungus gnats on the pot and in the immediate vicinity of the plant, the infestation is probably not too severe yet. All manner of insects play an incredibly vital role in our ecosystem; however, their place is outdoors. However, if you do apply an insecticide for fungus gnats, consider using Bti or Steinernema feltiae nematodes to control the larvae; see the section Biological Control for more information.

You need traps for the adults (so they stop laying eggs) and parasitic nematodes for the larvae (to stop them becoming adults). If you decide to use insecticides, select a product that is labeled for indoor use on houseplants, and read and follow all product label instructions. A soil drench is a chemical pesticide that saturates the soil and kills pathogens and insects like the fungus gnat. This product contains a blend of different species of nematode, this is perfect for controlling these fly larvae. To address a fungus gnat infestation, add some alcohol and water to a spray bottle, and spray any gnats you see. However, the two are easy to distinguish as fruit flies need fruits or vegetables as a food source and therefore do not stay in or around houseplants. Provide each plant pot with a Plantura Yellow Sticky Trap, positioning the traps close to the soil surface to directly intercept flies hatching from the soil. There are quite a few different kinds of yellow sticky traps, including ones that you can hang, so just choose one that works for you. Fungus gnats lay their eggs directly onto the soil surface and the fungus gnat larvae need moist soil to live.

In addition to feeding on fungi and organic matter in potting soil, these larvae might also chow down on houseplants’ roots. The best way to control larva and pupa is to reduce conditions they are attracted to, primarily moist soil media.I was hoping to glaen ideas from fellow a gardener and ran right up against the type of thing that is dividing us. For added caution, it wouldn’t hurt to properly dispose of and replace the top 2 inches of affected plants’ soil with sterile potting mix. Cover the surface of the potting soil of every single plant in your home with a layer of dry material at least 0. Remove and discard the top 2 inches of soil outdoors, and replace it with fresh, sterile potting mix suited to your houseplant.
