About this deal

Aged tawny is brilliant with stilton cheese, and very good with pumpkin pie, walnuts and milk chocolate dishes. This delicious example from Graham’s is at the lighter end of the style, with soft tannins and a delicious cherry and almond flavour.

It’s safe enough to drink, but if you’re sensitive to the smell, it can be offputting, and impacts the flavour of the drink. In years that aren't quite good enough for vintage port, producers will release a wine under a second label. The inspiration behind the Best wine collection comes from our wine experts, who are passionate about sourcing exceptional quality wines from the world's finest wine producers. A modern take on white port made with two grape varieties, Malvasia Fina and Moscatel Gallega which are cold-fermented and sold unaged to preserve primary fruit. Made by one of Porto's great families, the Symingtons, this is another wine that offers great value. When we tested supermarket ports in 2021, our wine expert Charles identified some bottles that seemed to be impacted by this, so there's always a possibility you might get a duff bottle. Like this 10 year old Tawny Port which we have made in partnership with world renowned Port producers, Symington Family Estates. This has a zesty, sweet floral aroma, with well-spiced flavors of apple tart, flan and cocoa powder.

This makes a great centrepiece for a wedding or celebration and would look mightily impressive on any sideboard or bar and the good thing about a tawny Port is you don’t need to hurry up and drink it. Natural corks may be suitable for your green bin or home compost caddy if you have one – just be sure to check your local guidelines and remove any other materials attached to it first. Late bottled vintage ports are of even higher initial quality, and are matured in wood for four or five years. When we taste tested port in 2021, we found some big brands shone, but a range of supermarket options also impressed our expert. Port is a Portuguese fortified wine often enjoyed alongside a cheese board, after a big meal or simply as a relaxing evening treat. The cheapest style of port but made one of the Douro Valley’s smaller producers, Quinta de la Rosa, there’s not a shortage of class. We've taken down the full results for individual ports, as vintages have changed since we tested so they no longer apply.

Then, while there is still lots of unfermented sugar, brandy is added which kills the yeasts and stops fermentation. Red ports tend to spend fewer years ageing in wooden barrels or vats, which should give them a fruitier, more tannic profile and a vivid red-purple colour. Everything is well integrated with pleasant notes of wild berry fruit and delicate floral sensations. It smells like muscovado sugar wrapped in orange peel, on the palate more oranges and tangerines with nutty notes on the finish. Port is made by taking very ripe grapes grown in the Douro Valley and crushing them to extract as much colour and flavour as possible (the top wines are still trodden by foot).

It’s intensely aromatic with floral, honey and citrus fruits, and makes a cracking alternative to gin when mixed with tonic. Dark in color, focused, good balance between fruit – plums, dried apricot-with the later presence of dried fruit and a structure where the volume is very evident, fat and greedy.
