The three books in the trilogy were initially banned in the United States, published only in France and Japan. Some of Miller's other works include The Colossus of Maroussi and Big Sur and the Oranges of Heironymus Bosch. It created a big stir, and was banned the following year, with the publisher fined and given a prison sentence. Miller died of circulatory complications at his home in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles, on June 7, 1980, at the age of 88.
